1. About the College


Government College of Teacher Education, Thiruvananthapuram








The college founded in 1911 by His Highness Sree  Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, Maharaja of Travancore is the mother teacher education institution in Kerala. The college has a remarkable history. It was first affiliated to Madras University and those who  completed the teacher training course successfully were honoured with a Licentiate of Teaching (LT) degree. Subsequently there was a change in the name of the degree from LT to BT (Bachelor of Training).  Later, following the all-India-pattern, the nomenclature was changed to  BEd (Bachelor of Education).

 
The college is easily accessible as it is situated in the heart of the capital city very near (1 Km) the Railway Station and Central Bus Station. The college is situated in an educational complex, surrounded by Government Arts College, Government Model LPS, Department of Education of the  University of Kerala, Kerala Institute for Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), Government Model Boys Secondary and Higher Secondary schools.
The institution has an infrastructure consisting of 37857 sq ft accommodation in an educational complex in a land area of  6.87 acres. Separate and sufficient accommodation is provided for students, teachers, research scholars and administrative staff.  The College has  a Library with  an  antique collection of books over one hundred and twenty years old and well equipped laboratories. The  Staff Quarters, Hostels for men and women and  a new block for class rooms were constructed during 2000-01,  helping the college to acquire the status of a Residential Campus. The  academic faculty includes the Principal and eighteen  faculty members  in different subjects  and a few of them are Research  Supervisors. 
The Silver Jubilee of the College was celebrated in 1937 and a Souvenir was published in this connection.  When the  Kerala University Act, Act 14 of 1957 was brought into force, University of Travancore was renamed as University of Kerala.  In 1956-57 the government sanctioned the M Ed Course in the college, which was later transformed to Department of Education under Kerala University. The college celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 1986. 
The Government of Kerala sanctioned the  MEd course during 1998-99. The college was elevated to the status of a Research Centre in Education by the  University of Kerala in December 2006. In  2008 the college was accredited by NAAC. The college has two major publications- The GCTE Journal of Research and Extension in Education and GCTE Research Abstracts.








At present, the college is having a sanctioned strength of 200 seats for BEd in 11 optional subjects and 25 seats for MEd.  Twenty-five research scholars have registered for the PhD programme.
The Centenary Celebrations  commenced on 16 June 2010. A variety of  programmes which included among others, an Exhibition, Rangostav, International Conference and an  Inter-training college Athletic Meet, brought together students, teachers and the general public to  the portals of the college. The Valedictory function of the Centenary Celebrations scheduled for 28 June 2012 will be inaugurated by  His Excellency,  the former President of India,      Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
